I remember seeing her arms
waving in the air
as they wrestled off her rings.

Kind and crotchety at the same time
like the mother I never knew..
Grandmother to my children.

Alone in the world
except for us
"junior" she called me
for a time we went everywhere together.

At the hospital I leaned close
"It is so hard to die", she whispered
"I know", I said...
even though I didn't.

What little she had
was left to a nephew
she didn't like and never saw.

I was a pallbearer
and watched while the nephew
and two undertakers
wrestled the gold rings from her fingers
just before the coffin closed
forever.

Larry

I'm sorry for you loss.  It must have been difficult to watch that with the rings.  *hugs*

I just don't understand greed.  Good to see you, Larry, and I'm deeply sorry not only for your loss, but what you had to witness.

Happened about fifteen years ago and the image just recently reared up again.

I'm hoping the other better memories will outlast these.  This left quite a picture...

Some people make me ill.
I am so sorry this happened.
Just try to live with your good memories.

How utterly disturbing to have witnessed such avarice ~ especially at a time when you were grieving! I can well-imagine why that sickening scene resurfaces from time to time in your mind!

Loss is hard enough... to have your grief marred by such a display of greed... horrendous.

Excellent write!
