If I were but a poet,
…and if I had a pen,
I would write a sonnet,
…in words of way back when,
I’d write of kings and maidens fair,
…full moons upon the moor,
Of gallantry and midnight trysts,
…behind stone castle’s door,
Perhaps a joust with armored knights
…black knight to feel pain’s lance,
With the victor goes the spoils,
…sweet joys of love’s romance,
But I am not a poet,
…nor do I have a pen,
So I guess I’ll go to bed
…to dream of way back when.

A poetess were she to be
...And if she had a quill
She'd write her verse of fantasy
...Of romance, flair and frill
Too much ado since days of yore
...Yet turrets' doors still ope
For gallantry just as before
...Entreat romance with hope
That o'er the castle moat might prance
...A white knight and his steed
Fair maiden's hand in lovers' dance
...A tryste henceforth decreed
She is a poetess perhaps
...Alas without her quill
Although she knows of time's elapse
...Her muse enwraps her still.

I agree with jo, perhaps you jest?

Ah, but don't you know you are a poet ...and would I to be the pen

If I were but the pen you hold
Between your finger tips
I'd ink the fragile web of words
Afraid to leave your lips
I'd scribble hearts in poetry
I'd draft out love in rhyme
I'd write an epic of lost souls
United throughout time
I'd savor every word and line
The two of us composed
As deep in thought you'd turn to me
Your graceful head reposed
And when the darkness finally fell
When day succumbed to night
You'd turn and softly lay me down
And gently bid me night
