when I was a boy
I had a gun on my fingers
and bullets enough then
for all the bad men
that flew over my sky
in sparrow wing capes
dropping bombs
in my magic kool-aid

my flashlight was my shepherd
and kept the demons
out of my valley
and the blankets were armor
that made me invisible too
I had a dog with one ear
that could hear the ghosts
before they came under the door

the pillows were people
soft people with handles
that my hands fit around
and they wore perfume
I said they were angels
without hair or eyes
and they liked my arms
and said I was special

when I was a man
I bought all the guns
and bullets that I could carry
but found that the sparrows
were just cotton with feathers
and the kool-aid was bitter
no matter what fell in
and I wished I could fly too

cuervo new my demons then
said they were not so tough
used to wash them down my throat
and leave new ones on the shelf
I would call him and his friends
when the sun showed me morning
sometimes after noon had gone
and evening was a shadow

the pillows were women then

very deeply expressed...and brutely honest

you bring great forth...a vital truth of human nature...and the struggle it is to stay afloat...I love reading you...
to me you are the Andy Warhol of PIP

Thank you for writing and sharing

Wow.  You captured the magic of childhood so well, and passed into the difficulties of growing up.  I refuse to grow up.  I've drank from a magic cup filled with imagination and play. It helps to keep the wolves at bay.  At least that is my fantasy.  This was very moving.

Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you.  Joy is a state of mind.

hard to know what to say to such a poignant, honest write poet sir...

but me thinks you know what Im thinking anyway.

Also made me think of that ole saying...
something about.........

"little boys and their toys"

I would love to live as a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.
