Climb in....
Destination,    First star of morning.

Hear the thunder of distant herds
as buffalo roam the earth as far as
one’s eyes can see.

Smell the smoke of the Iron Horse,  running
rails freshly built across endless plains as
a sleeper car gently sways rhythmically,
in unison with a moment of passion.

Feel the bounce and jerk of a stage weaving
westward across rutted trails....racing the
setting sun....and death that hides behind
the next ridge.

Time, much slower then.  When a letter
took weeks to arrive, carried in a dusty
brown leather pouch, covered in a horses
lather or a rider’s blood from an arrow’s
flight..

When breads were made daily in cast iron
stoves, blackened from soot and cherry
cobbler cooled in the window as a soft
breeze fluttered lace curtains.

When skies were silent except for the
lone eagle’s shrill cry beneath a blanket
of stars that seemed to fall into shining
eyes.

Only four generations separate then from
now as messages move at speeds the eye
cannot see.    A time where a coffee break
is rushed and lunch is gobbled quickly,
wondering if dessert will ever be cherry
cobbler ever again.

Yes, hop in.....let’s take a ride, listen to
the howl of coyotes beneath a silvery moon,
filling the sky above....as a fire crackles,
sending skyward glowing orange embers
that rise and die, disappearing from sight.

And a conductor yells loudly  “All Aboard”...

Inspired by Susan’s poem about history...  Thanx Susan...

Barry --

I do love it when you talk history!  Thanks.  This was a wonderful peace and I felt the ages melt.

I enjoy these visits to your previous lifetimes! They sound and feel authentic because they were authentic!

Happy trails!

Wonderful write Barry....
What time does that next stage coach leave for Dodge City?
I suddenly wanted to climb aboard carrying my parasol.
And then I realized I had gone back too far...
dropped the parasol and climbed aboard the train headed for New York City.
This is a keeper for sure!!

Some areas modernized slowly... I think I lived in a collection of anachronisms... for some of those things I know from more than tales and books. *S*

And yes... the priorities were different... the work was hard and free time was a treat instead of an excuse to whine of boredom... and letters were treasured links to family members far away. *S* Even phone calls took longer to connect than an email does now to write and send! *S*

I like this very much, Magnus... even if a look at how far we've come is often accompanied by regrets at what's left undone. *S*

And I still make a mean cherry cobbler... c'mon over for lunch!!! *S*
