Man, broken in the jaws of cruel traps
Far off against a horizon of Ponderosa Pines
Leaves a tattooed number on wounded necks
Hounds on the murmuring throat of life consigns

Haunting moonlight creeping back roads of the south
Tear drops hang and quake the mouth
Poring red blood into faith
From a drummer’s death march they break
Flees the song,”We’ve got Our War”
From the dying lips of blue and gray soldiers
Rain warm against their face
Tigers gnawing their bootlace

The essay betrays a house of silence
Great horns circle the swamps
With balls of thunder
Where flanks circle dark pastures
Unsteady earth balancing agony
Sending home messages of death’s marques

Misty with heavy hearts…running through thick woods
Thoughts of the dead scamper up slippery rock hills
Bone-chilling wind of orphaned landfills
Leaving their babies behind,
Fighting their way on a hillside
Wandering pastures of wounded trustees
Dark wild eyes speak in the night of distant relatives
Cruel patriarch racing towards a shocking motive

Of valiant unsung heroes with grimy skin
Kissing sacrificial worship of sirens
Smoke wreaths mingle with black plumes
In the deadliest hour of war’s glume
With the pride of black crows
Tribe grows archaic and cold
When all said and done
They fought their way home
Their sweet sweaty broken cause
Given to the graves of the earth
To the far off horizon of Ponderosa Pines
Where slavery gave up its design

Reminds me of a book I read a long time ago: “The Gray Soldier.”  It was about the Civil War.  This is a very interesting write Lee J.  Enjoyed the story.
