The Toto Of Oz

He looked real enough,
pulled the door wide open
with a joke and a well-met grin.

He was the guy all right,
you could see it in him,
voice full of courage and eyes
that said he had a deep heart,
and yes sir, brains enough to spare.

A man to trust with your daughter
for sure, the snow white hair,
big comfortable belly,
he’d take her home safe and sound,
slip into his balloon and away they’d fly,
that’s how he told it.

A little mistake of mine
sort of spoiled it though:
While he was firing up the burners
on that hot air extravaganza,
I just had to look around.

Curtained alcove in the corner,
blue lights flickering around the edges;
I pulled the curtain back and there
he was, a mere projection,
an illusion running a man
back there behind the cloth
trying to act real, frantically working at
holograms of keyboards and levers –

And when he stopped,
the wizard was gone.

I love the perspective you've chosen for this... I know there are times when my pets have been a better judge of character than I am... they're not blinded by pretty visuals like we mere humans often are. *S*

Your images are stark... and absolutely superb! Well done, my friend!!!

you forget, Sir...that sometimes
it takes a lot of courage
to pull back the curtain...

Ed

I'm thinking this poem is a metaphor for all the illusions there are in life...thinking things are bigger, when in truth they are just fakes with small opinions of themselves, trying to be more then they really are.  This could be said of alot of people, including politicians, or especially them.  That movie always scared the heck out of me as a child. Much enjoyed the poem!

Interesting that this would come back up just now....thank you Ron! I was just thinking of this poem, and for once without myself cast in the role of the wizard.

sigh...they always start out looking real enough, don't they?

Sometimes I can still believe if I wrap myself up in enough fog...

this one hit home today. thank you

This struck me as really kind of sad but very poignant, RatL.  You're such a clever allusionist.   ....jo

there is such a depth to this....on each level ...priceless! thank you.....

I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone though you're still with me
I've been alone all along..Now I'm bound by the life you left behind
