Smooth cold stone  stands between us,
a window too small for me, yet comfortable
to the vermin that come within upon
a cold and lightless night.

How many souls have shed their courage
herein prior to the gallows cry as countless
lusting eyes await the flash of steel into
the wood beneath one’s neck.

My judgement, harsh as the arctic winds,
subtle as the calm upon a spring pond,
infinite as the earth itself, dancing the
Universe.

Do not, do not I say...Do not cry for this
man as the hour swiftly comes at dawn.
For love shall carry my spirit into the
endless dream.  A dream where I shall
come to thee again.

And when the key turns, when steel flashes,
I shall slowly close my eyes as I hold a
single, simple vision...

Until the morrow walks among the stones
and flesh no longer holds me prisoner to
that which I shall never release...your
love.

How can something chill one's heart while at the same time burn with the heat of longing for a lost love.  I find this sad and yet hauntingly beautiful.

Susan,  being the romantic and somewhat
dramatic as well,  I sometimes have the
desire to write of this circumstance,  a
man who loves a woman forbidden to him,
awaiting his turn upon the gallows for his
discovered desires...vowing to never give
up the love he has,  even after death.

And now you have the rest of the story...
Does that sound familiar?  Thanx!!

Methinks a memory from the far distant past has resurfaced... ~ and quite convincingly at that!

Many a man hath lost his head over a woman!

Being a hopeless romantic myself, now I must brush away the tears.

Barry, you write with such enthusiastic conviction...which relays the honesty in your words and feelings.

Magnificant...

I to am hopelessly romantic...not to mention, a very expressive talker/writer...we poets certainly do have a perception and talent for understanding the ones we most cherish and love.

Gallentry is all I can say here, sheer gallentry!

Such romance and longing... left me longing too!  Beautiful!
