in the shadows

In my private rooms of memory
there are people,
a few alive,
most freed from pain,
some are faces,
others voices
or behaviors,
some just eyes
all wide and frightened in the rain;
dawn is breaking
air is thick
breathing harder
memories quick,
old wounds are aching.
Who remembers?
The dead do best of all.
So patient in my memories
knowing I've nowhere to hide,
when I was younger
I thought
I just threw away the ones who died,
as if I never would remember;
it seems
I took them all inside.
The world is quiet,
not even insects
or birds
are making sounds,
perhaps
it was the silence,
not the screaming in my dreams,
that woke me with the gray light
of this day's early rain.
I am weary of these burdens
and very tired of pain,
don't you dare tell me you're sorry,
or that you understand,
I don't want sympathy
for breakfast,
I always have the means at hand
to stop this karmic freight train
anywhere along the line.
I earned these pains
and memories
doing what I thought was right;
no one forced them to be mine,
no one draws them to my sight.
Perhaps
in some new lifetime
I'll read history with a smirk,
and see the devil
in the details
of a shadow's careful work,
laugh about the players
who took credit for the prize,
wonder if these memories
ever filled their waking eyes...

The sound of silence is interesting.  I think we take forgranted all the noise until it's gone.  It is a good time for reflection.

You have the wisdom of past trials to help
you fill the pages.  Many do not and never
will understand the mind of one who has
tasted war in it's most distasteful swill.

Perhaps you will, Icebox.  I believe all truths are duplicitous; that means to me that even the "peacemakers" at sometime or another are the "warmakers".  Very much enjoyed reading.
