Oh you, the gallant one
beyond the grassy knoll
who stood and did not run
from blackened cannon’s toll.

Oh you, the messenger
of freedom’s liberty.
The lofted carrier
of that which now is free.

You filled the nameless graves
upon the fields once red.
Our land’s courageous brave
who fought and never fled.

You felt the winter’s chill,
the harsh and freezing wind.
You marched the snows until
you staggered ‘gainst the bend.

You lay upon the earth
in shivers till you died.
Lads still so young of birth
whose mothers softly cried.

And when the volleys flew
and death did strike you down
You filled that nameless grave
a tombstone now your crown.

God Bless you all, then and now....

Yes, God bless our boys and pray that none more have to fall for freedom's sake.
Until that day, all mothers fall
To their knees and pray ....
and Lay at nights awake.

Still too many of us
Greet the morn in tears
Knowing that this is the day
We must embrace our worst of fears.

This is not the cradle of 18 years past,
That she must now lay her child to rest.
Bravely blinking back the deluge,
Receiving that flag in gratitude.

Your poem moved me to answer you.  I didn't know that I would be typing thru tears.... I just know the day come too soon when you face the likelyhood of your child going overseas to fight for someone's freedom or keep the peace of total strangers.  These are brave young men and women and we MUST give them the respect and support they deserve.
