We rode off for the border
in the dusk before the night,
no time to pack a suitcase
or even say goodbyes.
She sat in the middle,
you and I on either side,
and no one said a single word
until we passed the county line.

I watched the rearview mirror,
we’d raised a dusty cloud,
but I didn’t see another car
following anywhere behind.
She said, “I think we made it”
but your eyes said something else,
I watched the road behind us
dreading every turn and twist.

One hundred miles behind us,
before we saw the lights,
surely we were safe now,
but fear hung heavy in your eyes.
More lights exploded in the night,
red and blue revolved,
sirens split the silence,
and I pulled off the road.

One lone man walked to my door
his hand upon his hip
I heard your oath, mingled with her gasp,
and I began to sweat.
His eyes alighted on me
and evil was his gaze
he pushed me out onto the dirt
and grabbed her by the hair.

I heard her cry, “no, pa”
then everything went black.
When I came to, it was you and I
tied to the bumper at the back .
She was softly moaning,
and it was deadly dark outside.
I was thinking of my folks
and all things I’d left unsaid.

Suddenly, and without cause,
a shotgun cracked the night,
the moaning ceased, and dread replaced
any hope that I had held.
You told me you were sorry,
that I was a good friend,
and that if you could you would
surely save me from this end.

I never saw it coming,
but for the terror in your eyes
as he made us crawl into the car
and belt ourselves inside.
He shot you first, in the heart,
then aimed his gun at mine,
he rolled up both our windows,
and pushed us from behind.

It felt like we were falling,
that’s when I lost my grip...
I looked outside the windows
as the car began to slip.
Dark skies became murky
as the water inched on up...
I could tell we were sinking...
to a grave we’d not escape.

Ten years past...a sleepy traveler,
wakes up with a start
her dream it seemed so vivid
that the images still last.
She saw a face from her childhood,
and another never known,
both sitting upright in a car,
with water trapped inside.

She missed her friend for so long,
he’d  disappeared one night...
funny how our memories flow
as we travel through the night.
Wonder why I’m dreaming this,
nagging doubt sets in...
sadness seeps up through the night
and she longs for her old  friend...

Yes our dreams a concept in imagery and deceit, overpowering my friend, a wonderful read.

Joel.

I howl a mournful song, that echos within my chambered heart, for all to read? nay for all to feel.
