Berserker

Eyes shut tight
in frenzied concentration
as hot sweat pours
in salty rivulets
down grimacing cheeks

Grasp on reality
slowly fades
as the noxious impact
of another disappointment
sinks home

A sharp serrated knife
deep in his heart

Blood drips from fists
as fingernails
slash the soft skin
pain
momentarily slowing
his descent

But thickening shadows
swirling in the mind
grow darker
absorbing the last light
of sanity
