That Day
By Amy M. Kennedy

You woke me up that morning...
I heard the words "do you want to go?"
I rolled over still half asleep, didn't want to wake up then
It was Saturday, my day to rest...wish I had gone
But how was I to know what I do now
You and Dad sailed off onto the water to purchase the new boat
It was a beautiful day, warm and breezy
Birds singing, sky blue and cloudless
Waking up at noon, I stretched and went downstairs
An hour passed and the telephone rang
It was Dad, but he sounded so strange
Like he had been crying, he said there had been an accident
Something about you
Then he started crying again, and told me call the neighbors to stay with us
Said he had to go to the hospital, and he would call us back
So I did as I was told
Neighbors came, soon the phone rang again
It was Dad, saying he was coming home
I sat in the kitchen waiting for him
Stomach all in knots, I knew something was very wrong
Laughter from my sisters came floating down the hall
Dad walked in, we locked eyes
And without him saying a word, I knew
I knew you were gone, no longer with us
He went and got the girls, sat us all down
And with tears streaming down his face he simply said
" I am sorry, she is gone, your Mom is gone"
He confirmed what I already knew
The two of them both cried, holding each other
Dad and I still locking eyes, he simply mouthed "I'm sorry"
That day I lost you, my Mom and dearest friend
That day I lost my innocence, my sheltered world
That day I lost a big piece of my life
Nothing has fit together right since that day
Ever since that day, I have been working to build
Building strength, love, character, something to be proud of
That day I learned one incident can tear your world down
A few words can destroy a lifetime of happiness
That day I ceased being a child, and became a woman

 and you can say baby...
baby can I hold you tonight
maybe if told you the right words...
at the right time,
you'd be mine...

very touching. full of deep, tragic, but wonderful emotions.
