You Don’t Always Hear Voices

Sitting in the dim light with eyes focused
on the glowing coal between my fingers
Watching the blue/gray cigarette smoke
as it floats upwards toward the ceiling
Twisting and curling as if in silent agony
My head aches from the nicotine overdose
But I gratefully accept the throbbing pain
as it reminds me that I am still capable
of feeling something different
The confusion that often overwhelms me
now lies dormant in the back of my mind
Waiting for me to weaken and fall
so that it can ravage my mind and soul
But right now, I am the stronger
My spirit somehow bouyed by the pressure
of the wall pressed against my back
Hot sweat boils from every pore
becoming icy cold as it runs down my face
as I strain to keep the confusion at bay
Ignoring the cramps in my crossed legs
I force myself to remain still, controlled
Knowing that if I relax for one moment
I will be consumed by the monster inside
But it won’t happen tonight, not tonight
I am the stronger, I am in control
as I sit here in the darkened corner
gently pounding the back of my head
against the cold and unyielding wall

This is wonderful, such vivid descriptions of your fight!! Bravo

May the world hug you today,
With it's warmth and love.
I pray it whispers a joyful tune in your heart,
That tell you there is a friend sitting in another corner of the world,
Wishing you well and
wishing you love......

this is EXCELLENT!!
the aching imagery was perfect and the irony of the title is as well... very well written.
take care, jm

Now for me some words come easy
But I know that they don't mean that much
Compared with the things that are said when lovers touch
You never knew what I loved in you
I don't know what you loved in me
Maybe the picture of somebody you were hoping I might be

Wow...this is so well translated into words!! Leaves me speechless...

Very good indeed...You have great courage in order to fight the voices...I on the other handcan't win the battle..

Thank you everyone! But remember, this is only fantasy. I just enjoy allowing my dark side come out once in awhile.

you write so well!  i like this.  i can't explain why but a part of me feels as if i can relate.  does that sound nuts?  anyway, i really like it. (as a side note, the whole cigarette thing reminds me of a poem i read in french once called le petit dejeuner, ever heard of it?) good work!!!

Great lines throughout!  I also loved the imagery you created.
