Two women stand there, in the waiting room, obviously uncomfortable and tense,
there is so much pain between them...even a bystander could sense.

The room is filled with the thickness of their apprehension...
neither one sure of the other one's true intention.

They appear to be near strangers,
yet they are an almost exact reflection of one another,
two generations of pain...this grown daughter and her mother.

How did they get to this point-where there seems to be nothing left to say,
the only thing they seem to have in common is...neither wants to stay.

It is a chance meeting that brings them here face to face...
a painful reminder of the past, separation nor time has been able to erase.

The childhood wounds are deep...the family secrets say it all...
Abuse, Abandonment and Alcohol...
(and like her own parents, the mother knows this too has been her downfall).

The daughter broke the cycle, she refused to let it take her in,
but she carries the anger with her, tired of seeing the dysfunction win.

So here they are ... now looking to each other for sign...
searching for the words to start again and leave the pain behind.

These words don't come easy...sometimes they don't come at all...
too many mistakes, no second breaks...another family takes the fall.

When you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger...
And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool
So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger
While the loneliness seems to spring from your life
Like a fountain from a pool.

JanetMarie, Bravo!!  Glad you can break the cycle..  very moving piece hon.  I've come to love reading all your work, it's addicting

May the world hug you today,
With it's warmth and love.
I pray it whispers a joyful tune in your heart,
That tell you there is a friend sitting in another corner of the world,
Wishing you well and
wishing you love......

You reveal so much about yourself in your poetry and that must be why I like it so much.  This poem made me feel so sad and lost. A bond with a mother should be strong, but it seems like sometimes, no matter how hard you try, it can't be.     Enjoyed reading another one, JM.

Another heart wrenching poem, isn't it a shame what alcohol can do, you have expressed yourself beautifully in this, I could feel the tension.  Breaking away is the hard part, and it sounds like you've done great.  Take care.  Bonnie

Too many times the words don't come at all.
Powerful work here - I could feel the tension.

Very nicely written...there always seems to come a day when the consequences of our actions comes crashing down...with all its misery. And yet if the cycle is broken a new path is taken and a new journey has begun.  Where there was misery now the future holds hope.    James

I could feel the tension in this one. Sad at a time when they need each other too

Janet Marie,
Excellent work!

"The room is filled with the thickeness of their apprehension....
neither one sure of the other one's true intention."

'Real people poetry', I call this!  You write it so well!
