              A word of CAUTION:
If you oppose Capital Punishment you may not
want to read this poem.

                 After Midnight

        After midnight, new day begins
a final walk, this life to end

        justice served, another's life taken
the ends so near, hands a shakin'

months spent trying for a new appeal
efforts rejected, my fate is sealed

knowing the sadness my actions created
I leave this earth, mostly hated

getting my due, an eye for an eye
the time has come, a final goodbye

time draws near, I feel such shame
knowing I have but myself to blame

preacher's last words for hopeless sinner
I finish what remains of my final dinner

I start the walk, down long gray hall
hoping the governor will make the call

lying on table with heart beating fast
knowing my next breath may be my last

long moments spent only in silence
        then consciousness fades....darkness.

As far as capitol punishment, my feelings are mixed. there are good points on eighther side. but this was good and well written none the less. i look foward to more of your work.

Something has to change. An undeniable dilemma. But I am not a burden anyone should bear.

Reminds me of the movie "Dead Man Walking" as for my feelings on capital punishment, I lean towards a yes is all I will say.
Great work and emotion

Let your heart guide you. It whispers, so listen closely.

While my feelings on capitol punishment are mixed, my feelings for this poem aren't! It was great.

Danny,
issues and opinions aside..this is very good...and creative-to put yourself in those shoes and write from this view...very good work indeed. take care, janet marie

..."when you walked into the room...I saw their faces---
did you know--you made it seem like time was standing still...
and I felt---fascination...though I only knew you then--just casually...
then you slowly turned and smiled in my direction...
and my heart gave me away"....

Don't really want to bump this back up but it would be unkind of me not to thank those who have graciously responded to my poem.
So danni, Isis, Venus, & Janet Marie, thank you so much.

Danny, I really like this one. It brings up issues that we sometimes don't want to face. Encouraging me to look inside myself to discover my own opinion. Placing yourself in this situation makes me question both sides.
Wonderful job!
