never a care come to those
who consume their minds with
themselves

wandering around in nature's
harvest,devouring the fruit
of the earth so selfishly

never tending to one's character
never paying close attention to
what is inside

always looking to find another
another one to devour...stealing
their character,taking them for
a ride

a ride to the other side
where all the masks are
taken and worn on their face

they are like a thief in the
night, they try to steal others
happiness

darkness runneth over to the ones
shielded by their mask, they look and talk like
everyone else, blend in with the nature
only the nature of wrath

but sooner or later, the masks is
unveiled, and the one wearing it can
see ...that the only person being
fooled is the person that needs to be
free

Really enjoyed this piece.
The last stanza sums up so many emotions...
A pleasure to read

I agree with medusa. It sure is a reminder of high school. I have known many of these "masked people". Great piece Candace!

Not only highschool but all through life you find people hiding behind their masks.  Be they fakes, or scared to be themselves, clones of others, feeling that is the only way they will fit in.  Most probably aren't worth knowing, but one or two may surprise you.  Their beauty beneath the mask could astound you.
This was a deep provoking piece Bravo

You have great insight and expressed it extremely well.
I attempted a poem on this yesterday. Yours so much more captures what I was tryying to express. Frustrated with finding the right words, I resorted to a desperate attempt at humor.

Extremely well done
