And there I picked the pretty flowers,
those I planted on her grave.
I dwelled upon my occult powers,
and the love they could not save.

Many demons heed my beck and call,
chained to me by will alone.
Horrific fiends that make the skin crawl,
for her death they will atone.

Inchoate grief at the sky I scream,
unleashing might long held in.
From me power steadily does stream,
borne on the wages of sin.

Once upon a time love kept me warm,
thawing this coldness of soul.
Love's passion feeds this sorcerous storm,
holding chaos in control.

Thickening clouds gather to my spite,
pulled by the force of belief.
Clouds roll blacker than stygian night,
birthing this maelstrom of grief.

My will pulses down each magic strand,
between me and my devils.
Having no choice they heed my command,
ceasing inhuman revels.

Away in fear run those with no Gift,
as demons swarm to my side.
From demons to me frightened eyes shift,
not knowing my wife had died.

With tear blinded eyes I cast my spells,
each a wondrous work of Art.
Demons try to return to their hells,
as my words tear them apart.

Unraveling the threads of their being,
I weave them into the sky.
The unGifted halt in their fleeing,
though keeping a watchful eye.

Disloyal demons will mortar be,
to this spell I do attempt.
For these creatures devoid of pity,
my Lady taught me contempt.

The unquiet earth around her bones,
becomes far more than a grave.
Coalescing into building stones,
the earth itself to my will is slave.

Infusing demons with undead rock,
is taking a massive toll.
Magical backlash and aftershock,
is sure to burnout my soul.

The sorcerous storm becomes ebon fire,
melting stone like it was wax.
Her grave becomes a mighty gyre,
it's substance demonic pacts.

With a final convoluted spell,
the world itself fades away.
Demons are recast in a new hell,
part of her tomb they will stay.

Sobbing for her I fall to my knees,
then gaze at what I have wrought.
My tribute's beauty makes my heart seize,
for beauty's heart I have caught.

It seems different to everyone's eye,
showing the beauty within.
Hollow from pain I let my tears fly,
wetting my cheeks and my chin.

A whispering touch tugs at my arm,
calling flickering powers.
'Tis a female child fearing no harm,
holding my dead wife's flowers.

With elvin smile and nary a word,
this child restored my belief.
Compassion in my heart this child stirred,
easing my wizardly grief.

Amazing, Dream. That a work such as this could stem from a "pretty flowers" challlenge. You truly are a DarkLord. btw -
The happy healing ending caught me way off guard...a nice twist.

I agree with Michael regarding the end...I like it, too, and I wasn't expecting it! Magnificent piece here, Dream.

My kind of poem even considering my own preference for destructive endings
"tis good, tis dark, tis whole"

Pride of place in the human race goes to one without a trace,
of subtlety style ego or grace for this position, I wish to say, i would be proud as i am greater than any other face in the crowd
