Been three long years since sense took leave
Didn't wave at it as I watched it go
Recently it found its way back to me
This time, without you in tow

Returned, like a sign or a faithful friend
Neither of which, with us, I knew
I hope I'll not watch it leave again
Not like it left when I was with you

For you I was there, endlessly,
but there was no end to your take
I enveloped you in ecstasy,
but you reared up and bit like a snake

I learned not turn my back near you
for you would then duck out of sight
and then you'd want me to come find you
after you grew tired of flight

for long nights would come when you needed me,
just like they always do
you'd rush back in to gather me up
and win me back to you

it would take so long to cleanse myself
to sweep out the dusty keeps
the chambers musty, the firmaments tarnished
but they are still gleaming underneath

they only need to see sunlight and polish
and they will be as new
But I'll draw them out into the light on my own
and gather them together, far from you.
