Noises heard at dead of night
Upon the edge of sound
Reports of some lost soul in flight
Beyond the body's bounds

A half heard laugh becomes a cry
When swallowed in darkness arms
A vain attempt in fear to fly
Screaming shrill alarms

A slamming door, a passing car
Each threat a tight-held breath
A story told, heard from afar
A fearful brush with death

So close your ears, pull tight the sheets
And tell yourself "All's well."
While in the lamplight on the street
Skulk demons bound for hell.
