Sitting in Michael's Lap

O come, thou children of the night
And dance in Luna's silvered light:
Tho' cursed or damned thou mayest be,
Thine eyes shall see eternity
Unfold before thee, timeless flower.
Thy soul shall know no final hour
When age or ill might steal thy breath;
The shadow of impending death
Shall never fall upon thy form.
Thy face is flushed; thy lips are warm
With blood of life -- the sacred taste
That keeps thy flawless figure chaste
Of ravages of age and time.
Thy cause is just; thy need, sublime:
For what is death but meager price --
A trifle, needful sacrifice --
A moment's salt upon thy tongue
To keep thee fit, and ever young?

But nay, thy heart is in thee still:
Thou cannot live, thou cannot kill
Without remorse. Thy humanity
Is strong and deathless as are thee.
With conscience art thou cursed and blessed,
And love burns still within thy breast:
What place has love in such an one?
By thine own heart art thou undone.
Companionship might yet be thine,
But time flows swift! What wilt thou find
But that the Death thou needs't not fear
Has claimed the ones thou held as dear?
Thy soul is sad, thine eyes are wet;
Thy drink is bitter with regret:
On life Eternal, once thy prize,
Thou lookest now with haunted eyes.

Wow, I must say that this is phenomenal. I am a great fan of vampires in general, but this is truly an excellent piece. I have one with a similar theme (although not nearly as good). Perhap's I'll post it here...

TO DO LIST:

1) Add Vampyr to my favorite's list
2) Add Nochtdraco to my must read list

To be honest, I don't particularly care for the subject matter, but this is so well written I felt compelled to keep reading. Very rich language.

I thank all of you for your compliments ... this was one of my older poems, that I have revised over the years ... vampire mythology has always fascinated me ... but the thought of living forever is sobering if you look at it with a human heart ...

Sobering? Perhaps not. I think vamyre lore has been studied in a defeatist's light. A human heart can endure, nay, flourish in the opportunity of eternity. The depths of feeling one's heart is capable of reaching, the height's of exhileration, the lows of sadness and depression, the continuing appreciation of the beauty of the existence...

An eternity would be a continuing marvel, not the dreaded, morose existence so many would have us believe it to be.

reading this poem i can feel the power and streangth that would flow from one who is pretty much immortal. though the sadness at the end does make me think on the fact that man is not ment to live forever. and that our mortality is more of a blessing than a curse.

For the lack of a better word I have only to say this poem is amazing. I've always been interested in vampyr lore which made the poem all the more captivating. Very well written and put together.

Thank you all ... Michael, that is high praise ...

Sometimes the darkness in our lives makes us appreciate the light that much more.

I only wish I had the skill to put into words such passion and deep feelings. This sort of piece, is the reason I write. You are the poet who inspires me. You, like few others, who can make not the mind, but the heart and soul absorb the words. Beautiful. Is an Encore to much to ask?

I am literally stunnedinto silence. This poem is so expertly wrought, the rhyme and meter near perfect, the language exquisite and perfectly consistent throughout....I am fascinated by vampire lore too and this poem sent chills of wonder all down my spine. Wow! Stunned into silence I can only sit back and say again...wow!

Your skill is truly great-so great I think you should focus your attentions on a more tangible subject matter. If you wrote a piece on something that most could relate to-The response would be twice as phenomenal. But I love you and I believe you are my soul-mate. That was great poem....you said that sometimes the darkness in our lives makes us appreciate the light that much more.......
I also believe that while that is true...sometimes the darkness in our lives warps us to the point where we can no longer enjoy the light.........

"I used to be so big and strong,
I used to know my right from wrong
I used to never be afraid
I used to be somebody

I used to have something inside
Now its just this hole thats open wide
I used to want it all
I used to be somebody."

All the responses I have received to this piece have inspired me ... I think perhaps I shall endeavor to write a sequel ...

"Dark shadows blur the edges of my sight ...
But what is day without ensuing night?"

Thanks again for all the positive feedback.

Nochtdraco, this has got to be one of the best pieces ever posted in this forum - if not the best.  Thought I'd drag it back up for newer members to have a look.

Very impressive indeed. Surprised at how much I enjoyed it as the subject matter does not have my full appreciation. I think it is one of the finest things I have ever read.
