BLACK

I call on the power of night,
The shield that I don.
Protect me from the earthly curse,
Me, the chameleon.

Ever-changing emotion within me lies,
Passion fences with Pride.
And Sorrow sleeps within the deep
Of the ebony tide.

For the only light that shines, shines black.
Through immersed channels in my mind.
Where all hope gleams from the buried dreams
Of the overly, if once, inclined.

While the wielded dagger punctures the skin.
Cutting deep into my chest.
Yet if in darkness no one sees me bleed.
'Least I have not failed my test.

For courage flies on gold tipped wings
Which would weight the best man down.
Yet a wounded heart would play no part,
Dying Dignity shares no crown.

So Honor and Respect stand bereaved,
Silenced at the wake of Pride.
As the morning sun's perpetration
Wreaks the stench of deicide.

For who should contrive such accolades
As smiles and open arms?
For such fiendish, fictitious masquerades
As sweetness, guile, and charms.

Who could walk the world but half a man,
Yet, still with head held high;
Dare to glare into the fair,
(If only aspiringly), sky?

Oh I pray for darkness, solace, silence.
As I don my shield of black.
In the exhaust of a little boy's sanctity,
Something I never can have back.

Well I am sweet & guile & charming, so am I your fiendish, fictitious masquerade ??? **blushing** Seriously, this piece really moved me....your words are so powerful - I just can't say it enough...The way your emotion explodes in your work is superb, dear Michael....I would still like to get inside your head, as long as it's a package deal with your heart - I bet I'd be in awe at what I would find......KEEP WRITING!

Michael, this is top shelf poetry. Your strong metaphors and dead on meter really make this poem a pleasure to read.
I look forward to reading more of your work

I can't help it, I have to say it. Don't you ever write anything less than perfection? Very well done. I find it an honor to read such great poems with my humble eyes. Excellent work!
