He paused mid walking
Crowds around just talking
The air cluttered with sound
Buses bustling by
Cars careening nigh
Too much everything around,
So he opened a door
To a just opening store
To get away and to take a look
Of what ever was there
As long as he was elsewhere
To this quieter side trip he took.

Beyond the door
Was an old bookstore,
(The books that is not the store)
Stacks of them piled high
Waiting for the shelves nearby,
Or a display to catch the eye.

It was a place dim and cool
And a short woman on a stool
Placing book on high
Skirt riding up showing thigh
As she reduced the pile
Paused to give him a smile

He really didn’t need another book
But while there he thought he’d look
Over classics from long gone ages,
She in time got the books all right
Although so high they weren’t in sight,
She called them her hidden pages.

Eventually he found a tome
Between quiet conversation exchanged
Just something for him to take home
He left as she began to rearrange
Stacks to shelves in many rows
Now stooping for placement low.

Returning to the street
Joining the shuffling feet
With new old book reality meet.
