Boredom comes when energy's defused
attention wanes, interest's abused
perk up talks of trivial matters
conversation widens, at the hatter's...

Pick up the tempo of creative pace
the mind needs food when there's space,
it doesn't clutter with disinterested matters
but falls into dormancy where boredom shatters.

It shatters the desire to acquire something new
shrouds vibrant minds when thoughts run blue,
boredom comes, interest's abused
attention wanes, energy's defused.

Sort of a minaturized sestina?

Interesting effect.

I happen to have a brother-in-law type figure in my life (long term girlfriend) who has suffered the fate described here. He's 27 years old, but spends almost every waking moment in front of video games or television. He doesn't work, he's flunked out of University, and blows his mind out on pot and booze. Boredom can indeed be a pretty destructive force to one who's mentally unprepared to handle it.

I no longer ask who I am, or even what I am. It has dawned on me that there are no answers to such questions, except for our feeble-minded notions.

Hello Wornways

I'd say the man isn't bored with the video games but persistly glued to the internet or phone while avoiding employment (which may require concentration) is symptomatic of chronic boredom..thanks with sharing, had a chance to visit your website..

Ilana,

then you weren't bored with the topic..

Well, I wasn't bored when reading this.  Boredom sets in when my wife goes to visit her family and there is no one to greet me when I walk in the door.  I so look forward to seeing them.  It sets in.  I go to bed early.  Kind of depressing.  Usually, good beer and good friends find a way of picking my lethargic body back up off the floor.  You picked an interesting topic, ran with it, and it worked very well.  Well done.

Hey Kevo

Someone mentioned the value of having a poet here who can write on just about any topic. Every now and then I like to get into character traits, weaknesses and strengths apart from the general "my heart aches for you" type poems which are also nice to read now and then.
I am not married but have a girlfriend over many years and I'd say one way to break the habit of getting bored is picking up an interest that can occupy a part of the mind that will feedback to that centre which is used to having company. I hope that doesn't sound too complicated. You have a technique of getting together with friends for a beer and that's also useful sometimes. This is how I feel good about myself and how not just my girlfriend, but family and friends are all that more pleased to be with me because I can be happy on my own too. Take care for now
