state of confusion

I was in camping hell. Back home,
friends were chirping over first kisses
or slurping icies at the Green River Shack.
I stayed in my tent and wept for two days,
me and the rain.

When the sun came out, Mom ordered showers
and a family walk. The restroom floors were sandy and wet;
the water on my back tepid. My hair breeze-dried

as we trudged beneath a crescent cliff;
a guano-covered boulder jutted from the sea. Behind us,
a triad of smokestacks shot gray plumes into the sky,
ruining the picture perfect.

On the beach, I slipped, fell on slimy rocks.
My fingers wrapped around a corkscrew of kelp.

Mom thought it interesting enough
to bring along to the group campfire.
Flashlights and firelight illuminated it,
revealing something inside.
A curious bald man held up my prize,
declared:

Shark egg!

The crowd moved to see
and touch.

You need to put it back girl, in case it’s still alive.

Torches led the way
to a moon-fluttered bay.

Morro Bay...home to these feet in summer time pleasure...

oh gads...

do you know how much I wanted to change my birthday to any month of summer, just to have a birthday party at the beach?

Oh...oh....

you've made me homesick...you described it so very well...I've walked those steps, Corinne...

I've tasted that salt...

and I've dug for the clam of it, as well...just down the road, at Pismo...

thank you for this lovely of home....

Morro Bay... What a beautiful place.  Been there often...until my grandparents passed away.  They lived there.  I know quite well what you speak of, the smokestacks, Morro Rock, the seafood restaurant at the dock along the boardwalk.  I've been fishing there among the boats anchored, yet still dancing on the water's edge.  The sea otters breaking clams upon their little pelted breasts.  Morro, such a magical, beautiful place.  One of the most beautiful places in existence, in my mind.  I'm sorry you didn't get to appreciate it for all its beauty and grandeur.  I hope that looking back you can see how precious a place it truly is and it seems in your poem you are taking away a feeling, a memory that few will ever understand or share.  Your poem was beautifully written and the imagery sharp.  I could see everything you wrote about.  Thank you for taking me back there.  It was nice to see the bay...any my grandparents one more time.

Thanks JL!

Karilea,

thank you for that wonderful response - warmed my heart! Loved that sketch, too!
A poet at another site insprired this by mentioning a spiral shaped shell in her response. Made me think of that darned old shark egg. It turned me around and I enjoyed (most) of the rest of that camping trip up the coast. We traveled from San Diego to the State of Washington. Gads of stories came out of that trip. Like when Mom almost drove us off of an unfinished bridge. Or when she drove into the area where the planes take off at SFO (they probably changed their security measures after that incident!). haha.

I've stayed in Pismo before too, with the kids, en route to San Diego. It's a big, loud party town in summer. A great place to stop on a long driving trip, because the kids can run wild on the beach after sitting for so long in the car.

Kevin -- glad this brought back such tender memories! Your grandparents were lucky to have lived there. Now it's becoming expensive and new growth (housing) has been allowed in. Too bad, too, because it was such a cute place for so long. They must have had population growth control there for thirty years because until recently, it hadn't changed much.

God I love the way you take me there.

Fabulous Corinne. I'm looking forward to the next trip

Corinne

Morro Bay holds many memories for me too, some bitter and some very sweet.  Thank you for reminding me how precious some things are.

*sigh* Morro Bay is one of my favorite places on this planet. LOL, haven't been to the beaches on any other planets yet.

I am sorry to hear it is experiencing *growth*, though I expected this to happen about 20 years ago. I loved walking on that beach, even in a heavy fog.
Thanks for letting me stroll on that beach again, Corinne.

Every cloud has a silver lining! From your rather horrendous experiences, came this great poem!

Loved the story....how well you conveyed
the memories of a special place.  Sad that
civilization so often takes away from us
those things we remember from those special
years when we were young.

Thank you all for your kind, thoughtful comments!

I was afraid no one would know where Morro Bay is, but it seems a lot of you have been there! Makes it all that more special to me, thank you!
