Listening to every heart

Breathing In

The smell of books.
       Let alone virgin paper,
                Would seem to some –
                          Ludicrous.

Even when I slash into a ream
      Of fresh bond ~
             Smelling the tear
                    Of blue wrapped holding package,
And the almost vinegar scent
       Of leach to white,
Or onionskin,
       Before tin-canned ribboned ink fell
       In shadowing truth, although
It was a scent, almost long gone now
                              From my life.

Paper     seems to retain
A mystery of what is yet to be –
                 Like my heartbeat ~
Which comes and goes on its
                 Own decidedly inept way.

                         Paper is like that,
Because I don’t know ahead of time
What once life force I may hold
Soon enough ~

~*~

My daughter found a book of Thomas Moore’s,
       Of  “The Lansdowne Poets
                       Notes, Life & C.”
               No copyright, in better-than-fair
Shape, with life taking toll as it does,

                          And there is something about
Old ~
             Books, especially,

                             When the wood smell returns

When the ink scent has faded
           In old;
But the deep, rich, pungent smell
Of earthy wood decay from
             Walking a richly timbered forest
Falls up from footsteps,
Or touch of finger to turn
                  Time

As leaves turn…

This….

          Is my life.
                  As books

Are my future.

So…

Write well, upon the parchment,
Of yesterday and tomorrow,

              And I will
                            Breathe you in.
And then, again…

Ah very nice.  'tis true, the pleasure of inhaling a scent of a book, or that of papers written long ago, or virgin.  Much enjoyed.

I agree with the birthday moth 100%!
If ever Ron decides to do another book this piece is a must for it!
I too love the smell of old books, new books and paper....
Extremely well said.

Touching books to the worn pages sitting lonely on the dust laden bookshelf in some obscure bookstore.  I love books as well.  I collect antique books.  I especially enjoy the personal writing on the inside covers of my 19th century books.  They all seemed to write so eloquently then.  With the writing, etc. I see a glimpse of history in the book.  As if it want's to tell a story.  How I wish it could tell a story.  Yes, I love the poem, and the tattered, lonely books I find.  I am in solidarity my page-loving friend.

You have a magnificent talent for catching the reader’s attention, and drawing them in to you every word.  Wonderful write!  Really enjoyed.

I feel just this way about old books. And untouched paper as well. What a perfect way of saying this.

Oh too bad this didn't get in "Reflections" what a wonderful theme poem this would have been along with the dedication to Lyra.  Lovely Sunshine.
