Why has the pinch of my cheek
between your finger and thumb
reached my heart before my brain,
leaving me numb like flowing venom
through my veins?
Is love cold, calculated,
or unexpected, unplanned?
Is it always pain?
Is it a hissing cobra,
a viper, coiled to spring,
and snare the very soul of me?
If I face the cobra, its bite could bring the end.
That is why I run away
afraid to face the light of day.
But my breath, though weak, sighs one thing --
that I might die without your sting.
Could this venom merely
kill the pain?

Or is it true, a serum pure
could be a cure to
everything?

Oh, my iliana! A brilliant piece of writing ~ but stings to the core!

I'm sending you a bottle of "serum pure" faster than you can say, "Angels Are Among Us". It is sure to cure everything that ails you, Sweetums!

Loving hugs,
Linda

iliana,
I wonder from where the cobra came.  You know this is perfectly written... I hope it has not been inspired.  Sending o and x your way.

Inkedgoddess -- deep down, I know that -- a moment of memory hit me last night and I just let it muse me; pretty potent cobra bite, though!  Thanks for reading and your sweetness.

Wow!!!   Strong stuff, is there any antidote for feeling what is toxic may be nourishing?
You so beautifully capture this dark and paradoxical side of passion......Big   ~P

Thanks, Paul.  Your comment said it all -- love is a paradox -- at least, that is what I've seen.     ....jo

in answer to your question, I can only say in all truth, when "in love", there is joy in just being there with him/her never uttering a word, they call it perhaps the heat of passion, but I call it, a love like God intended for us.  It is all encompassing and good.

Terrific write...thank you

Dixie -- yes, a good question -- but I have found the truth of it -- the poem just came from some feelings I remember.  Thanks so much for your response.

Interesting read, quite thought provoking.  Love is like that, yes?  At least between two lovers.  Perhaps we should all become snake charmers, allowing love to dance for us without needing to taste the poison?

A friend told me once that love was like having fifty clamps set on your heart and then having them pulled tightly in every direction, with some chunks being torn off and others left there, forever tugging the heart.
He was right... and yet, love (almost) always seems to be worth it.
With meds the doctors have given me, before taking them you have to weigh out whether the relief makes the side effect worth it. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't... I hope with whatever this painful bite was, that eventually the side effect fades and haunts you a little less.
Very expressive and real poem, I love it...

Always, Alyssa

(sorry for the lengthy response... I really do have much too much to say!)
