The Bounty

Searching,
ever seeking this bounty
we endeavor to claim.

Walking this lingering mile,
marching headlong
into the tempestuous day
that claims us all in the end.

As I take my stand
with weary brethren I find
that without reservation
I walk into this valley of death.

Rest for a moment.
Find your breath and wipe your brow.
Keep your barrel out of the dirt!

Drink plenty of water!
Take off your boots!
Dry out your feet!

Ten minutes of bliss
feeling the breeze
across the seasoned cheek.

Get up!
Get on your feet!
Move it out!
Let’s go!

A dozen clicks
of serpentine path
before us never ending.

This camouflage entourage,
I find once again in contempt
of my disciplined spirit.

Yet,
I will not break my bread
with those falling by the wayside.

March by night.
It’s much cooler,
but you can’t see.

Myriad reflectors
dot this intrepid mile ahead.

Serpentine river of Kevlar
Donned upon a battalion of heroes
As they march on
In search of freedom’s beacon for all.

Principled foot consoled only in victory.
This sword of Gideon he wields.
5.56 millimeter Ball-Nato round.

Tracer’s light this intrepid night
while his son sleeps on the other
side of freedom.

Every 5th round is a tracer.
Find your mark!
Bust him down!
Lash out.
Victory comes ripping.

Labor of love toiled
for the betterment of all.
Sacrificial lamb is laid to rest
upon this crimson field.

This child awaits
the return of his father.

You do have a way with bringing the soldier into the heart.  Stirring.  Moving.  Very talented, sir.

Hi Kev, this is quite a dramatic poem. Very moody and interesting.
