like me this ranks in the getting on catagory - this is about 40 years old and one of my first writes while sitting in Yokuska, Japan on the deck of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet wishing I had enough cash in my pocket to go ashore and have an outrageously good time getting plastered.  I was 19 at the time watch this Sea Eagle fly around the ship like he had no place to go ... just like me.

Had a hell of a time the next day though (payday - a whole $78.00 before taxes for 2 weeks) and wrote something then if I can find it...and of course after that day/night had to wait 2 more weeks for money = luckily we put to sea for a month that week-end.

Oblivion

On the frost coated window
I've drawn a square,
representing my house,
a dot inside the square,
me, sitting by the window.

I've drawn a line
past the front of the house,
the street,
and little dots along that line,
trees lining the street.

Another line is drawn next to the first
with a dot at the far end,
me,walking down the sidewalk.

From the house I watch myself walk,
taking slow, careful steps,
so as not to step on the cracks,
and I’m looking at the trees
wondering how they’ll look
in a hundred years.

Round and round the window,
with my hand
I’m wiping off the frost,
the circle getting smaller,
smaller and smaller,
until . . . Oblivion!

The house,
the street,
the trees,
the sidewalk,
Me . . .
Oblivion.

Ouch!!!  Jimmy, hang in there!  This was quite an expressive poem; your feelings really came out.

Jimmy -- this was a great write -- only 19, huh?  Speaking of Japan and aircraft carriers, my mom's sort-of adopted brother worked as a mechanic on carriers in Japan about the same time....his name was George Debold Miller -- you wouldn't by any chance have known him, would you have?

Talent??? More like badly hung-over sitting on the flight deck soaking up sunshine wishing I WAS oblivious - - -  to the pain I was feeling....LOL

You guy's are way to kind...and Iliana, don't know if I remember anyone that long ago...hardly  remember my own name anymore.  If I did - betcha we had fun 'cause I always had fun when I was in the Navy (sometimes the results of that "fun" were a little painful though....hee hee).

this was a nice poem, when you look back and remember what we were like at that age, our thoughts, our dreams, perhaps gives us a new perspective, that time heals wounds, even the internal ones.  Very much enjoyed...thank you for sharing a quite frankly excellent first poem with us.

Take care and Happy Friday
