in the shadows

I am becoming cold hearted in old age,
no sense of urgency to turn another page;
when I have already figured out the plot
of any book
I stop reading,
somewhere in the middle;
to me,
it is no different from letting telephones ring
without the boiling over need to pick them up.

What is with that anyway?
If I have something I am compelled to say,
then I will find a way to pass the thought along,
or if someone has some thought to share with me
I'm sure they find a way to get their point across;
not getting back an answer to an email,
in fifteen minutes or less,
should not be an Earth shaking loss,
should not cause a sane mind to crack;
or walking out of movies
before the second act just because the movies sucks,
and no force on earth could pull me back,
or disappearing without a thought of some goodbye...
OK that one's different...maybe,
another time I will try to look at that again,
but my point is I refuse to be a ball
within an old pinball machine,
bouncing without force of will off every bumper
ledge and sill until my play's exhausted
and I drop down in a hole.

Look,
it isn't arrogance,
though I know it easily can be taken so,
but arrogance always,
always,
always is the outward shell
built from insecurity inside,
though the reverse is not always true;
I have never denied that I have my moments
when I am less secure,
but that is not the point,
I am sure there is a reason
we have to live so many times,
maybe it's simple
and we just forget
how many ways the verse of life can rhyme.

Hmmmmmmmm....makes me think.  Not much of a comment for now -- I pointed out my favorite part, but that analogy of the ping pong machine....wow....

Icebox, There are so many ways we can be, so many thoughts we can think, and I guess somewhere, sometime, it's just a matter of choice.

Man, can I relate to this...my kids hate watching a video with me because it just doesn't matter...if I have grown weary with the plot line or whatever, I don't mind walking away in the middle, just before the end, or whenever...I think life gets that ways as we grow older...we reset our priorities according to the time we perceive we have left...with lesser and lesser concern for what others may think...

nice, thought-provoking write...

Icebox -- I'm still pondering.....

Dixie & Steavnr -- I think age has something to do with this, but I think it's something else, as well.....the overflow of information....the ease of discovery.....I'm still thinking about this one.

hmmmmmm....maybe just to get it right, or to help someone else get it right.

That I can relate to. With age nothing is that urgent anymore.

Quite an analogy, as Jo said. I love it. This whole post is so good. I lived my whole marriage  to a man like this and I had nothing but respect and love for him in the end. Granted it took a life time to learn to understand and you have just helped me more. Thanks "Late"
