Listening to every heart

0 posted 2004-06-07 11:33 PM

LineChimeTimes – for Corinne

It should have been noisy, but
lively living child in me
played too hard
to notice outwardly noises ~ after all, the
noisy 50’s LA wasn’t all that deafening, yet.

We moved up coast, to a
tiny town, where songbirds lived
long, and loud…living, and proud…

then we moved southerly again,
not to LA, but to where valleys sucked us in,
verdant, well lived, where deep holding sounds
of lungs held fruit…

but not so far from where the earth didn’t rumble;
not lunging from underground faults, always,
but overhead, in anti-missile-missile protection lines
of tests in strength; where rumble addicted lives loved…

hear the sound, move out to watch…
will it go beyond sight?  Will it detonate in despair?

LineChimeTimes…

Later, I moved to the Midwest…
silly me…naïve beyond reproach…
economy driven Illinois in the ‘70’s, visiting
family in the boonies, as their land was christened,
rural, to me…simply rurally beautifully intact…

and then I heard, in a dark cool December,
missiles…rumbling through God’s night,
but different, sounding east to west,
not south to north…

I mumbled, questioning, “Missiles? Out here?”

“Trains,” they said…
trains…

I listen closer, now.

Karilea - if I whisper, will you listen?  Keeping in mind, I must stand close...

And what do you hear these days?
The memories we associate with sounds seem to last forever, and re-visit us in dreams.
Now I'll be thinking about trains again, LOL.

Karilea,
Love your write. Nice. I was five when the first missile rumbled by our back yard in the dark. I got in bed with my little brother to comfort him. Wish he had woken up!

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

LA in the fifties was part of my life...and it was good then, still quaint in its way, sometimes you could see Catalina or the San Gabriel Mts...or play hookey in them. Great years.  Thank you.  KJ

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light
