Coming Home
Through the window a small beacon shines
for a sailor’s return from the sea.

Too long has he been gone.
Saluting the Commanding Officers…He turns,
takes that last walk down the gangplank for
his tour of duty now is done.

She stands there waiting… With tears falling
he runs to her….

Beautiful.

I got into this one hook, line, and sinker!  I felt that little tremble when they met...
a sweet moment!  Glad I stopped by!

Well, it was back in the '60's for me, and it was an aircraft carrier gone for almost 9 months - and there was no one there to meet me.  I did watch all the hugging and kissing and dancing and tears others received - sailors with someone to meet them were always allowed to go ashore first - which was only fair I think. But what I wouldn't have given to be in this loving piece you've written...

well done, my friend.

Thank-you all for the wonderful comments on this poem.

It was 28 years ago I stood waiting for my husband to walk down that gangplank for the final time. I wrote this poem for him and for all of the men and women all branches of military coming home to stay.
