If Only
inspired by Sudhir’s “rectangular space stammerings”

If only
each of us
knew how to
draw our boundaries
to set aside the space for our paces

and yet
still believe we are free

to not be like the cow
ever reaching beyond the fence
for that which is greener

or as a child
ever seeking
to reach the pinnacle
of our shadows
upon the sand

if each knew
how to enjoy the rainbow
without dreaming
of what may be at its end

but then
if there were not longings
would we learn
of the beauty at hand
when we find ugliness beyond

and to overcome
the ugliness at hand
because of the beauty
around the bend

if we had not yearning
could we reach for the stars
how different would we be
if we remained within the boundaries
where our paces were the safest
and the unknown prevailed
one step past our shadow’s end

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
