in the shadows

It is cold here
in an endless night,
easy to forget
a jungle is a desert with too much rain,
lonely now
with too much awareness
from the inner sight of memory,
too little pain
for all that happened,
it could be said it should hurt more
to be dead so far from home;
fear too is cold,
and in passing from the need for life
I thought we would leave the fear,
the crushing weight of knowing
we weren't leaving here in any way that could be understood;
quiet now,
not like the endless tearing moments of fire and steel,
I remember
how what I thought was real became a child's dream;
running,
thinking I could hide anywhere inside this shadowed valley
where we died as we were busy killing for no reason,
at least none that has survived;
we are waiting,
each with our own separate agenda,
some around me I have recognized across what must be years
since the jungle has returned,
and there are trees where I once stood
on blasted ruined ground
mixed out of ashes,
mud,
debris and blood,
the memory of fire
licks without heat
upon this waking dream through which I pass
waiting for the understanding that may finally take me out of here;
cold,
so very cold,
the sun's heat passes through me without stopping.
I believe
one day I will be leaving this place of green horror
forgotten honor fertilized with death,
where nothing was resolved,
nothing lasting was attained,
where our blood slowly has washed away
every time it rained.

Wow.  Excellent expression of the futility of war without compelling purpose.  Very sad too.

There is so much truth in your words, and the reality of them all.
There are many ways to interpret this,
and the reasons we cry tears in the end.

There is no comment I could add here that is sufficient to convey the way this reaches the very heart.  I have to believe that there is a way, though.  I hold on to the hope that the strong uplifting of what is love beyond our knowing out of what is chaos will someday come.  Thanks for making us think.  ....jo

"a jungle is a desert with too much rain"

This line grasped me, originally. Although it is only one small part of a bigger picture, it's a really great line.

"I believe
one day I will be leaving this place of green horror
forgotten honor fertilized with death,
where nothing was resolved,
nothing lasting was attained,
where our blood slowly has washed away
every time it rained.
"

You write in ways that people can SEE, and FEEL. I love that.

I am still just a traveler
trying to find a home,
yet, knowing that I carry it around
and sometimes
it is just too damn heavy!

Wow!

Having never served in the military and being put in such a situation, I have nothing to base the feelings this work brings out. You get across exactly how it was, well, as close as you can. Not too many people realize how lonely and scared our people get away from home..brave, yes, human,,,,,very

I wish all could find the true happiness I have found,,in the eyes of Mike
