Setting Back-Fires

When spring feels such an oath to weeds
and wives who garden narrow urges,
I glimpse her smile.
I see the look of open range
when it rushes from the trees
clinging close and nervous
up against the Cascade Mountains.
I recollect the way she didn't
move like the rest of us when we hustled
up the trail. Always easy to pick out,
her hips betrayed a desire
to keep her sex anonymous
when in the thick of it. Her helmet jostled
and sat precariously. But when we stopped,
spreading out to set back-fires,
she seemed to fit
perfectly.

I know that walk...
especially when working calves
with the cowboys...
making sure they kept their mind
on the job at hand.

Thanks for this, Robert.

Thank you, all, for taking the time to share your thoughts. For those of you unfamiliar with the northwest, we aren't all trees. Oregon is probably close to being half high-desert. The transitions between forests and grasslands, and grasslands and desert have a way about them. Again, thanks much. Bob
