It caught my eye one day towards the end of May
obscured but partly so by wayside flowers wild
and I paused to feel and enjoy reflected memories
glinting, gleaming, glistening, in the field of hope.

Confused it seemed familiar as if I’d spied before
a diamond in the broken bits of a tall wine glass
snapped from the stem by time’s disdain
and discarded on the run.

Perhaps an uncut crystal, a clean and fresh dewdrop,
and wary I walked forward from where I was before
to get a closer look like paging through a book
to find the chapter, verse, and line, read before this time.

But diamonds are too precious to be thrown away,
crystals too far buried beneath the surface of a life,
and dewdrops glisten only for too short a time
to warrant the delay on my walk that day in May.

And yet I paused, and yet I moved, and yet I hoped again,
till finally the sun went down and clouds brought in the rain
to hasten my withdrawal from the onset of heartache
and from the pain of insight into the truth of soul.

Sometimes peaceful I go back to see if it’s still there,
sometimes I have to wonder why I stopped to stare,
but most times my tears distort so grand a view
to leave me looking down at the same familiar ground.

Diamonds, crystals, dewdrops, and I’m a silly fool
for believing, knowing, sensing, they’re all a part of you!

You think not, passing shadows?  I don't know anymore and I hate not knowing things.

You are one of my favorites poets, and I never tire of reading your work.
You're in a class by yourself, and that's a very good thing.

I especially liked the way you ended this~

Here's to you, Helen dear!!!

Thanks so much, Bluesy.  I lost the rhythm in your quoted lines - here's the corrected verse:

Confused it seemed familiar as if I’d spied before
a diamond in the broken bits of a tall wine glass
snapped from the stem by time’s acquired disdain
and discarded on the run from emotive states.

It's a long hard battle not to fit into a mould - writing wise that is - and remain satisfied with one's own style - sort of like eventually accepting oneself for exactly how we are.

You take care, Bluesy, and remember that in this life all things pass and we live through them.

Helen, many times your thoughts have given me understanding and hope where none exizted inside me.  You have elevated my soul.  I am proud to call you friend.

Icebox - Thank you so very much.  Your kind comment has brought tears to my eyes and that's something I have great difficulty in controlling.  Emotion = tears and that's my own private battle which one day I hope to overcome.  I really do want "dry eyes"!

Susan - thanks so much for taking the time to read and to comment.

Thank you, Martie! We are all the same and experience all the same feelings and emotions at some time or other.  It's how we deal with them, how we learn from them, that I think will eventually equip us to fulfill our true purpose in life - and life doesn't end with who we are here today.  Still a long haul ahead of us I'm a-thinking.
