Between the Lines

I sometimes wonder
what friendship really means
when it can be like a ship,
sailing on the seas,
the high tide bringing it closer,
until it no longer has the strength or power
to hold it close to shore.

I wonder why it is there for the taking
but not for the giving
and by accepting, knowing a time may come
when it falls off the horizon
and is no more.

We have but our sail (mind) and rudder (heart) to persevere the tides...yet, we are inherent sailors, each of us.
