Portrait of a Still Life

In waking moments the soul sleeps
And we the walking dead mumble to unseen ghosts,
Pondering why fate feels so much like death.
This bleak, saddened picture the heart paints
Slowly begins to run like tears,
A black oily substance that smells of pain
Smudging faces, smearing green pastures and sun colored roses---
And life’s still print becomes a memory…
I drift to a restless sleep.

The fading light becomes darkness
And my soul awakens to my new creation--
Puzzlement and pity are the expressions of his frown,
“What have you done, my brother?” he asks,
My reply is slumber and quiet prayers.
So alone he walks along the ruby lining of my heart
Trying to find a small piece of love or faith
To recreate the beauty of our happiness;
And as he loses hope, his black tears paint death’s promise…

I awake to his surreal visions not unlike paradise
For irony is an illusion that begs for realness;
These eyes have now been blessed by Heaven’s kiss
And in the darkness that covets my weakened soul,
The flaming sword of the mightiest Angel
Shines a light on the lies to comfort his plight;
Heat and terror burn into my heart
And I cough to release the pain,
Staining onto the ground,
Bits and pieces of my past,
Those silent whispers that sing me to sleep
And finally I dream……

In this dream I see my twin,
Sitting alone in the darkest corner of my heart
Talking to himself and wiping away his dark tears,
And through blurry eyes he sees me and smiles,
Causing my heart to shed its deepest secret;
And as we embrace, we laugh and cry of old times
Before the nudging of fate bids me farewell;
In parting, I hand him three roses:
An ivory rose for the purity of love and faith,
An ebony rose for the beauty of death’s reflection,
And a crimson rose for the blood that bonds us.
So in sorrow I depart under bright skies
And I awake to a golden existence;
My heart now smiles under the dove filled skies
And somewhere within the depths of my being
My soul sleeps in peace.

Marcel

An interesting take on loss.  Your words and imagery were beautiful.

I especially liked the lines:

"So alone he walks along the ruby lining of my heart
Trying to find a small piece of love or faith
To recreate the beauty of our happiness;"

Mm so poignantly true.

If I were to touch you, would you bleed a velvet river, running miracles through the sodden ground? --Moi
