I met a friend recently who lost his wife of 25 years to cancer. He shared his memories of her and in so doing also shared his grief. This poem is written with the profoundest respect and deepest sympathy for a man of great dignity. His ongoing struggle to cope with her death touches me deeply and has helped me to truely understand the devastating travesty of losing a loved one.

Living Death

I laid her gently down to rest
An end to suffering and pain,
Now the suffering is mine alone
How do I go on again.

Two lives entwined in one life
One lifetime shared by two;
Now this life is mine alone…
How do I live anew.

Two hearts, once, beat as one
For an eternity all too brief,
Now, one lies cold, forever still,
The other, dead from grief.

The mind seeks perpetual relief
Cloaked in a haven of sobriety,
Only to meander back and forth
Poised on the edge of insanity.

The soul wanders in aimless pursuit,
Searching for an elusive shadow
That lingers on the fringe of reality,
But isn’t really there, I know.

Ahead lies this eternity of
A lifeless void of emptiness,
The ebb and flow of endless tears
Won’t erase the scars of lonliness.

Perhaps soon, I too, will pass,
For living is but in vain,
God, I pray, please take me away,
So I could be with her again.

Anwaar you have shown a deep amount of understanding
and compassion for your friend.
He is very fortunate so have someone to share in his grief with.
You are a good friend to him and I know you will help
to see him through this time of sorrow.
Very deep and touching poem.

I know the ache of one's loss of a truly loved partner.  Thank you Sir, for sharing such a feeling.  Life is so very important; when you have lost the one that makes you feel whole, it is indeed the worst feeling.

anwaarhassan -- you honor your friend with this tribute to their love.  It was very well written to convey the sorrow.
