A Thousand Miles Away  (Dear John)

At an Army base in Germany a lonely
soldier writes to his sweetheart.
It's been six months since he
left her in California.
Every night about this time he writes her.
Every thought from his heart
is spilled onto the page.
But tonight teardrops fall
onto the paper, and the pages
become wet and hard to read.
Still he writes of
getting back together.
Telling her that she's the
one he loves and needs.
And yet he knows what
was will never be,
for she wrote to tell
him that they were through.
Her letter said, "Oh, by the way, you
weren't around so I found someone new."
She must have know that her words
would tear him apart.
She must have know that it
would break his heart.
She knew, for he faithfully
wrote to her everyday.
But a man in her arms
was more desirable to her,
than a love letter from a man
a thousand miles away.

James, this is a very beautiful write, compassionate too.
And ... sadly true for many in this situation.

Man ain’t that the truth:

“But a man in her arms
was more desirable to her,
than a love letter from a man
a thousand miles away.”

It never fails.  This is so sad, but I bet too often very true.
Excellent write.  Rings loud and clear.

JamesMichael~
I like the way you are stretching poetically~

Having been part of a group of young women who would pen-pal to men in service ... I know firsthand the heartbreak the 'dear John' letters caused.

You've written this well~

Thank you passing shadows, Margherita, JL, Marge and Susan for the lovely responses...
Marge I pulled this from my memory many years ago when I was stationed in Germany...however this is not about myself...I was not serious about anyone when I enlisted...so just said goodbye, I'll see you the next time I'm in town...but I did watch many receive Dear Johns due to separation...and there was one that took it lots harder than some of the others...his was a highschool sweetheart and he wrote faithfully to her every day...after six months he was one of the last to receive his sad letter...part of the reason why I don't believe in long distance love affairs...James

James, exceptionally emotive writing! Well done! Whew, I was actually feeling what it must have been like for one of those soldiers receiving a "Dear John" letter.

Aloha and aloha hugs,
Linda
