I sit and watch the sun go down,
And paint the western sky.
My thoughts now tend to dwell upon...
The fact that all men die.

"That's quite a morbid subject",
Some people tend to say.
But I find no depression,
With the ending of the day.

I love the blend of colors,
When the day dies in the west.
And I think of all the phases,
I like this one the best.

In my youth I was too reckless,
In my prime I was too hard.
But now there is a tenderness,
Although I'm gray and scarred.

I stop to smell the roses,
I've learned to take it slow.
And now I take a camera,
Almost everywhere I go.

I sit and sip my coffee,
Listen to the whippoorwill,
And smile to hear the coyote's song,
On some barren, desert hill.

I'd like to die out yonder...
Let the vultures pick my bones.
And lie there as I've lived so long,
Unbound and all alone.

And if you chance to find me,
Don't place me in the ground.
Just whisper, "Cowboy, rest in peace-
Your final sun's gone down".
