Listening to every heart

Fingering Love

It seems that my fingers
use to be as busy as my mind,
in ways only mothers
understand.

So, regardless if she were dressing
for an infrequent evening out,
or if we were day-busy
folding towels or other laundry
just in from sun and wind,

if my thoughts were elsewhere,
she would go to the cigar box
of treasures,
remove her beads, and say,
here, add to them, or

make the necklace shorter for me,
and when you are done,
we shall have tea.

With dollies three, I would sit, and count,
popping beads to lengthen strands
to touch her breast,
or choke her neck in the delicious
color of her eyes,
my only link to knowing
I was really hers, all along…

and in some way, they must have become
akin to a rosary, and if that is sacrilegious, then
a talisman, connecting
mother, to me…

for I remember counting dreams to bead,
beads to thoughts, thoughts of
how I might become
as good as she, then shaking my curls
in her sunshine, even as she made impossibilities
seem…possible

I hope they are somewhere safe now, if not
in some wayside antique store,
then in a cigar box,
wrapped in white tissue,
awaiting a mother’s amusement,
as she slips her hand along her daughter’s tresses,
patting her back, saying,

here, add to them,
make the necklace shorter for me,
and when you are done,
we shall have tea.

This was so beautiful K..i love how you transported us back to your childhood..and allowed a brief but precious glimpse of a special moment between mother and daughter....touching and yet gentle as dragonflies's wings....thank you...

A delicate piece of a girls past...carried
throughout the years within the heart of
a woman...reflecting, remembeering and
most assuredly.....smiling.

Karilea

How perfectly lovely this is...but you forgot the kleenex alert.  My mother didn't have beads like that, but I spent alot of time sitting on the front porch, snapping beans.

Once I sat at my mother's hospital bedside, listening while my sister's "read" and replicated a crochet pattern that my grandmother had taught my mother.  That cross generational picture will always be with me.  Thanks for rekindling the memory.  KJ

Well, Sister, your brought tears to my eyes with this one.  You have reminded me how much a little girl looks to her mother and up to her mother.  It's just Macy and me today (Chelsea has to gone to her dad's house).  I think some quality bead adding is in order for the two of us!

Hugs to you this Sunday!

My Dear Passionate Sister, my words cannot express how deeply I felt your words.
Hopefully, by my adding this poem to my trove of poetic treasures, I will be imparting at least some of this appreciation to you.

Love & Light,
Linda
