Down to Earth

“You,”
he spoke in an understated way,
“are highly pragmatic, in the best sense.”

It was a critical assumption,
no game, this, for he would play
none,

and I identified with various equations
of the word.

He did not mean hard-nosed, I was sure.

Neither did he intend that my heritage
was speaking for itself.

We had talked of idealism,
even while he knew of my yearn for utopia,
still and all, he knew
I knew
it was not to be,
not in any of my lifetimes.

Nor had it been.

He likened my sensibilities
to rock-salt;
a little goes a long way;

and he averred

that I still had a long way to go.

With that said,
and I having no place to go,
he poured another glass of wine,
then we turned our attention, once again,
to the impracticalities
of our association,
and McKuen.

After which, life lifted
and earth lost me
for a little while.

Deca

A wonderful scene...gave me just enough to imagine the rest....only the best know how to do that.

Great piece, vivid scenery.

it's easy to see you are influenced by McKuen you have the same sense of words with meaning and higher meaning. Excellent job here.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

What a smile you write...of sensibilities and living poetry. Liked this very much.
A little flirty at the ending...grin.
