Ghostly grey faces stared
back at me.The company of
men, ashen faced with fear
and seasickness, the French coast loomed large.

Warships firing salvos from
14inch guns, weakening resolve.
Silence within the landing craft,
soon we would be near the beach.

Thirty men, tightly packed on
a flat boat, heads below the gunwhale.
Near miss explosions in the water,
sound of gunfire, louder and louder.

Charging the beach, smell of burning, and sniper fire,
machine gun and flak surrounded us.
Negotiating  the defences, fired on
by German 88's, wading in water.

Jagged holes torn into fellow
men, from the bullets of snipers, sat
in concrete bunkers, feet thick.
Blood and oil mixed in the waves.

Shells bursting closeby, showering
us with black water and dirt.
Mortar fire exploded all around,
heavy artillery from the cliffs.

Mines exploding at the touch of
foot or landing craft sides.
The congested beach rained on
by precise enemy fire.

Like angry bees, bullets flew
past, richocheted or found their marks.
Wounded crying in pain, dead
men littering the sharp sandy beach.

Scores of men wiped out in the
blink of an eye.Bravery in battle,
they died serving the world of
humans, in an inhumane exhistance.

Thank you Illiana..we must never forget the sacrifice that these brave men and women gave to the free world....maybe you could write something in remembrance....

A very powerful and moving tribute to all those who gave theirs lives so I could have mine, to have freedom....

So many more need to be honored...never forgotten...

Keep their honor alive....let them know that their lives counted for something...

I hope more poets write and post before M~Day...i am still working on mine....

I love how you tell it like it is..I love your details and descriptiveness...
