My mother asks:

Where’s your can opener?

I rummage through two junk drawers, fish one out.

What happened to the battery operated one
I gave you last Christmas?

I mumble something about getting lost in the move;
pierce the tomato paste's lid.

We chop garlic, green bells, button mushrooms.
Stir them into a pan of sautéed onions.

Why aren’t you using your CuisineArt to chop the veggies? It’s faster.

I tell her it’s just not the same.

What about the space-saver opener,
what happened to that?

I say the kids don’t know how to use it.

Well, I couldn’t live without mine.

I ask how she would open a can in a power outage.

She shrugs,

I don’t deal in what ifs.

A simple dialogue...
revealing all of the complexities
of what ifs...

There's quite a dynamic simmering under the surface of this. It's a great poem corinne.

Corinne, you felt as tho' I was right there in the kitchen with you and your Mom!

Usually it is the older generation that clings to old ways. They often shun the gadgets and modern miracle machineries! lol

I'm like you! I may have all the gadgetry in my very modern kitchen, but I still like to do the chopping and mixing by hand! I'm a hands-on sort of cook!

I really enjoyed reading this!

I don't think one can ever really win a debate with a mom...

I enjoyed this write

Mothers and daughters debate?

I remember the time when I was, oh, about 30...we were visiting the family in California.  I asked what I could do to help with supper, and dug right in to fixing the meal.  Mom came up to me, put her arm around me.

"Don't you think it's about time we became friends?"

"But, you're my mom."

"We can be friends, too..."

"You never wanted to be friends, remember?  You were Mom, and we were the kids.  Period."

"Well, it's time you should know...I made a mistake or two.  Can we be friends, now?"

It wasn't easy, slipping out of the binds of childhood, to know my Mom as a friend.  I don't think we ever really got the hang of it, because I lived much too far away to take advantage of my newest, oldest friend...

but it was a nice thought, and I hope she knows how much I appreciated the offer of laying aside her mothering, for her friendship.

OhCorinne~
Gave my little heart a nostalgic twist.
My mother had every "gadget" ever manufactured.
I was the 'old-fashioned' one in the kitchen.

What I wouldn't give to spend just one more holiday preparing a meal with her~

Thanks for the smiles mixed with teary-eyed stuff~

Thanks everyone! We have this conversation every time she comes for a visit.

I think it's really a will issue. She wants me to cave in and use an electric can opener, I refuse no matter how many she buys me.
