Listening to every heart

How I Know Him…

This tow-headed child ~
my best childhood friend,
my worst childhood adversary…

He should have been the elder,
you know,
I always wanted a big brother
to bring home the good looking boys…

but fate is funny
subscribing that I be elder
he, taller…forever younger…

but he grew tall enough
to carry the train of my goodbye
he didn’t even cry…

remembering, my first time home to visit
after secession,
as an adult-child,
when he, the graduate,
stood
up,
from the common kitchen gathering table,
never seeming to stop…his head surely
would hit the ceiling,
so tall, so tall…

~*~

he tried to deny
his dreams

but they would not deny him…

no cowboy, he, though played at it, for a while,
to make dad smile,

he had to find his way
to find his way

to find his voice…

he shared once that mother comes to him, her fingers
curling
in his music
just as dad comes to me, whispering to me
my writings

I am acquainted with the feel…

~*~

misunderstandings kept distance between us
for a time,
but now,
our later years
appreciation of all deeper losses
brought us together again

then in fingering memories
we drew our composure again
my brother and his music
fits his sister’s reveries…

in his deep belly chuckle
I hear my brother
with new tender heartstrings
knowing he was never
gone from me…

not when I hold our tracings within…

I'm so pleased to see this again Karilea..especially now.
I do believe the gentle stroke of pen runs in families.
The pictures are priceless as is your love for one another.

I've grown much closer to an older brother the last several years.  We hadn't a difference of feeling in the early years, just 12 1/2 years of age to keep our interests different.  Thanks for this one and you know that musicians touch in ways no others seem to.  KJ

Sunshine, this especially touches me and encourages me that good things between my brother and I will someday "be" again.

wishing both the best for years to come.

Karilea, I was literally moved to tears as I read your loving words and beheld the accompanying photos! This must surely be one of your brother's favourite treasures. It appears that God has blessed your family with the talents for creating both poetry and music!

Loving hugs to both you and your brother!

Linda
BTW You were one cute little baby girl!

I was the youngest of 4 boys ... a large age difference kept us apart I guess ... never knew this type of relationship, though your tellings make it sound so desirable

I know both the incredible bond with a sibling... and the chasm that makes shared genes a mystery... What a beautiful tribute this is... the words touch one's heart... the pictures wrap it in love. *S*
