Sometimes I’d really like to set the suitcase down
And take a rest long needed, rest these weary bones
That ache beyond description.

Why do some suffer pain’s severe affliction,
And others walk with easy care
As if they floated upon thin air?

It seems like years are chapters; many lessons felt.
And turning pages, going on,
For some of us is hell.

Yet for others, it’s adventure, discovery of what’s new.
And maybe that’s what pain is, too.
But I’m ready to let that go.

Is it through the feel of pain with all its shoots and ladders
That we discover who we are
And that which really matters?

Or is it from disability, we find compassion’s song?
And if, perchance, you have pain, too,
Please know you’re not alone.

It is a process of letting go, growing old, that is.
And those of us who suffer so and no more have the zest to live
May understand more than you know
About the import of “forgive.”

So if you’re reading my lament and feeling sad for me.
Trust me, that is not the purpose.
It’s merely,
Poetry.

Iliana, I'm finding it hard to believe that this wonderful piece gained only one comment-albeit a good one!

Up you go!

iliana,
Remember Dad with limp and determined smile.  He was a real role model.  It was as if he defied the pain and said, "Life here I am!"  Even though adventure was handicapped, it made it even more special to see his curiosity.  And you?  I'm sure you are like him.  I was proud of you in N.Y.  You had that same smile!  Your poem is well written and touching.  (BTW, happy Mother's Day!)

Jo,
wow... I've wondered all these things before (too many times to count). For me I think it's a mix of things... learning what counts, learning compassion, forgiveness. You can learn to read other people... (people wiggle their toes if they're in pain, and if they're mad then they make a fist or put hands in their pockets). You can learn to talk to others who are in pain with just a glance. It's a kind of understanding that you can never get without pain. Ahh I do talk way too much. I love this though, and love how your compassion shines through

Always, Alyssa

GG, you are an old soul, aren't you.  I can't believe the wisdom you have at your age, you little sappling.  It shows in everything you write, even your responses.  Thanks so much for stopping by and enjoy the 'morrow!

It's really hard for me to say how this struck me...

Brutal understanding of a universal feeling, hope, or desire, is enough to push anyone off of their chair.

This did that, and more.

I'm saving this one.. it's a jewel.

You are really REAL! It is like you are speaking right from the you of you to the me of me of each of your readers. You are authentic and a real McCoy! I appreciate your compassion, your wisdom, and how you keep on ticking in spite of any licking you may have had in life.

My own life has been both charmed and cursed, but from it all has come an inner strength and a better understanding not only of others, but of myself.

Yes, at times we do need some time out to rest and recharge our batteries!

Loving hugs,
Linda

Is it this poetry that has us all captivated?  Or is it the poet who can make a tear fall, a tree sing, or the darkest day as bright as the sun itself, and turn a debt into delight?  It must be both, and in that I will say, you are truly a delightful poet!  Thanks for sharing!  I liked this one a lot!
