My Best Friend Was a Tree

The bars and slides
were the hot metal of me,
the running boards of cars
and skidding knees,
skate keys and a cat’s hunger
for peanut butter over tuna.
Those bare feet were grand, still are,
but the best thing for me
was my best friend, the tree.

The dirt,
mold it to my trail
where a faucet turns on rivers and lakes
and the dandelion wishes me wings
and come true sometimes fails.

I can see the movement of time
in the place that used to be,
made of girl dreams and plum leaves,
where I was taught so long ago
that big and tall trunks can be severed,
and trees, also girls, don't live forever.

Oh gawd Martie...this should have come with a kleenex alert!
This last stanza reduced me to tears...
How sadly beautiful...heart hugs sweet lady.

~ Trace my body with your words,
in doing so, you touch my heart ~

This doesn't surprise me
just pleases immensely...
for I too,
had a friend for a tree...

So much of Martie in this poem...I've wished for a long time that you would post it, and I'm so glad to see it here. Seeing this, I see you.

love the way you wrote this...

combining the emotions
carves it deeper

a tear caught on a half-smile

What Balladeer said

this is gorgeous Martie and so are you

Mxx

What are you my god? You touch me like you are my god
What are you my twin? You affect me like you are my twin.

I am a firm believer that there is joy in each sadness, and this poem once again has proven that. Nice to read you as always.

Today I'm only moving clouds, tomorrow I'll try mountains.

oh girlie..this one comes from places deep.
There is always so much to see and feel in your poetry...

I can see the movement of time

yesss... time is kept and measured by your heart's cadence.

I love you more the further I go ...
before this existence ... you were always here inside of me.

Such is the beautiful sadness, as you give strength and perish the grim into arms a mile wide.

Martie,
You did it again!  You have wisped me away to mulberry trees, dandelions, and leaf letters.  I so love your writing.  I never know where it will take me, and how long my journey will be.  You leave just enough space in your imagery for readers to travel through the keyhole.

Martie, I love looking through your eyes.  Reminds me of the mulberry tree my 'lil sis and I climbed.  A few of the old branches were just the right size to become horses, or dragons -- it was our friend.  And, it broke our hearts when we lost it after our children, too, had learned to love it.   .....jo
