Marines in Mesopotamia

With war acquainted
camels blink
and rhythmically continue chewing.
In the distance
battle tanks rumble north along a route
once devoted to spice merchants.
Caravans clank into the fertile, soft extent
of the Tigris and Euphrates River valleys.
On the horizon, dust humps
as artillery rounds thud near a ziggurat.
"What's that?", entombed, a driver asks,
as slowly, then, from west to east
the turret of the main gun sweeps
to better peep into the mound of artifacts.
Youthful eyes consult a map.
"Ur!" the sergeant of the Abram shouts.

Footnote: Ur: the ancestral home of the partriarch, Abram, later called Abraham.
