in the shadows

I'm not waiting on tomorrow,
I'm not wishing on a star,
I've lost touch with honest living
and I'm wondering
how far I can run tonight
while you soak in applause and accolades.

Ring the bells for all the dancers
bring the house lights up a bit,
there's a full life wrapped around you
and I'm too awkward for the fit.
I'm not waiting on the sunshine,
I'm not wishing on a dream,
if I am gone this time tomorrow
I will have just slipped through a seam.

When the curtain calls are over
don't bother looking in the shade
pluck the tinsel from your hair,
show the world you've got it made,
don't turn around to find me
just walk on I won't be there
I've swept the cobwebs from my heart,
life begins again tomorrow
perhaps to each a brand new start.

icebox

This starts out so sad and final, but ends with hope and new beginnings.  After reading it several times and feeling tearful for you, I realized the ending was good for you, and smiled.  Well done!

You have the staying power, and it's a certainty that no seam can swallow you. You'll get to where you're going, though where that may be is hard to see from a distance.

I agree with ole Willy, too -- that it's all a play.  Obviously, you don't like the spotlight and I understand that feeling.  But, I do hope you hang around here.     ........jo

This is full of the best images-I like it.  Standing in the wings is no place for you.

icebox,
I liked this very much.  I enjoyed the movement, imagery, and contrasts.  Your writing carried me there.
