Cowled Hawk

Carried blind like a trophy,
hood down, targets
selected by inferior eyes,
he will fly when allowed
or not at all;
and when the dive's complete
called back so easily
to the twirling lure.
That is the pattern:
first the cowl, the sudden
mercy of unwilling flight,
and then the lure,
his return ingrained,
spirit gripped by talons
beyond a bird's fathom.
But give him one taste,
one conquest free
of the taming will
and the lie's exposed;
then night, the wheeling
call of wild stars,
and he is gone.

Such is nature,

Well done, Sir!

Jamie

then night, the wheeling
call of wild stars,
and he is gone.

Amazing what one lives with, not knowing any better.  Great metaphor and imagery!

You paint so vividly with your words that I feel the brush of wing and ache with the yearning for what could be... what should be.

This touches on many levels, my friend... and leaves a mixture of emotions... primarily sadness that something born to soar fulfills the needs of another at the expense of achieving his own full potential... and the sacrifices aren't even appreciated. *S* But there's also hope that the spirit still hears the stars and will someday answer with free flight... for life, not just brief moments. *S*

Absolutely beautiful work!!!
